Currachs Traditional Irish Fishing Boats
Inisheer, Aran Islands, Galway Bay
Inisheer islanders go fishing on curragh boats. The construction and shape of these mostly rowing boats have been perfected since as long ago as Early Christian times. The wooden frame used to be covered in animal skins. Today, animal skins have been replaced with a more economical tarred canvas. Photo © copyright by Debbie McCulliss.
