South Georgia holds about 95 percent of the global population of antarctic fur seals, an estimated 4.5-6.2 million animals. Early explorers in the 18th century hunted seals to the brink of extinction for their thick fur pelts. Their diet consists mostly of krill, but also squid, fish, and penguins. Breeding season begins in late October through December. Photo © copyright by Debbie McCulliss.
