King Penguin

South Georgia

Standing more than three feet tall, king penguins have a slate-grey back, a glistening white front, a jet-black head and an orange-gold neck and throat. They are the second largest species of penguin, second only to the Emperor Penguin. They only have one mate per year and live in colonies, the largest being at St. Andrew's Bay and the second largest is at Salisbury Plains. South Georgia's total King Penguin population is around half a million breeding pairs. Their chicks are fluffy and brown. Photo © copyright by Debbie McCulliss.
