White Sands National Monument

White Sands National Park, located 220 miles south of Albuquerque New Mexico, is the world’s largest gypsum dune field – a rare occurrence and one of the world’s greatest natural wonders. Although the dune field has existed for thousands of years and has seen many generations of hunters and gatherers, White Sands only became protected as a national monument in 1933 and then the United States’ 62nd national park in 2019. The park covers 145,762 acres, filling the Tularosa Basin. Photo © copyright by Debbie McCulliss.
